A few days ago, Michele took a call from a military member in Anchorage who just brought home a five-month-old Cavapoo. He wanted manners and companionship and was quietly wondering if this little dog could one day help carry some of the weight of anxiety and the daily grind.
That conversation stayed with me because it mirrors so much of what we teach through Peak Experience. Real partnerships, whether between a handler and a service dog prospect, a business owner and their successor, or a musher and their team – aren’t built in big dramatic moments. They’re built in the daily repetition of clear communication, consistent expectations, and earned trust.
At five months, Sage is like any young leader or new team member: full of energy and potential, but still figuring out the rules of the trail. Without structure, he might pull on leash, get distracted by every scent, or struggle to settle when life gets loud. Sound familiar? Teams do the same thing when expectations aren’t clear.
This is why we start with foundational work. Commands like “Let’s Go” on a loose leash, a solid “Stay,” and “Leadership Stays” teach impulse control and focus. They create a dog (or a person) who knows what’s expected even when distractions appear. In mushing, we see it every run: the dogs who understand their role and trust the line move as one unit. The same principle applies in family businesses and leadership transitions.
The families who invest in that early foundation aren’t just getting better manners. They’re building confidence. The handler learns timing and leadership. The dog learns that showing up consistently leads to freedom and adventure together.
Whether you’re raising a puppy or transitioning a business, the message is the same: invest in systems and relationships early. The payoff shows up later when pressure comes, on a busy trail, in a stressful meeting, or during the inevitable challenges of life in Alaska.
If you’re navigating a transition, in business, leadership, or even with a new dog, the principles are transferable. Clear expectations. Consistent reinforcement. Real partnership.
That’s what we build at Alaska Dog Works and what we coach through Peak Experience and Dreamchaser Leadership. Reach out if you’re ready to move from operator to architect in any part of your life.
